Shelby County Jail removed from non-compliance list

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

CENTER, Texas (KTRE) - The Shelby County Jail has been removed from a state standard non-compliance list. The jail had been reported as being in violation of eight state standards after failing a state inspection on July 18. The standards were largely related to documentation, inmate observation, and general jail upkeep. As of Tuesday, the jail is no longer listed as non-compliant, meaning they have passed further inspection and rectified any issues with state standards. Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Chad Hooper told KTRE in August that the violations came as a result of staffing issues that had since been resolved. Hooper said the jail began taking action to address the issues immediately upon receiving the notice, and they were sending daily reports to the state to show their progress. On Aug. 19, Hooper said they were still actively working to regain compliance, including the implementation of a dedicated compliance officer.
