Jasper ISD Superintendent John Seybold says contrary to rumors that have been running rampant on social media, a student at Jasper Junior High School did not have a gun. Seybold explained that on Thursday morning before school started, a “concerning” message was found etched onto a restroom wall, and at the same time he was made aware of a social media post referencing the situation. According to Seybold, Jasper Police were immediately called and they confirmed that the student in question did not have a gun, and all parents were made aware of what had happened. Seybold went on to say that both the school administration and law enforcement were able to determine that there was not a credible threat. However, and unfortunately, rumors continued to spread throughout the campus and on social media.
Full statement released by JISD Superintendent John Seybold:
Thursday, November 7, prior to the start of school administrators were notified of a concerning note found etched into a bathroom stall at Jasper Junior High School. At the same time, they were made aware of a social media post referencing the situation. The note made reference to a student having a gun at school. Administrators immediately called in law enforcement, verified that the named student did not have a gun, notified all Jr. High parents of the note, and continued an investigation. Administration and Law Enforcement were able to determine that there was not a credible threat although rumors continued to spread throughout the campus. We ask that parents continue to speak with your students about the importance of reporting dangerous situations immediately to an adult. The safety and security of our students and staff is Jasper ISD’s first priority. We always want our students to feel safe and secure coming to school.
