MANY, La. -- A Sabine Parish man is in jail after hitting and killing a pedestrian Monday night as he attempted to cross the highway, Police Chief Cheryl Wooley said. The victim is identified as Perry Barnhart, who was in his 50s. He was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving attempts. Many police and Sabine Parish sheriff's deputies tracked down the suspect, Fredrick Myers, 60, at his home in Fisher, where he was washing his damaged vehicle. Myers was booked into the Sabine Parish Detention Center on charges of vehicular homicide, hit-and-run and obstruction of justice. The incident happened just before 10:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 171 inside the Many city limits. Barnhart was hit as he attempted to cross the four-lane highway, Wooley said. Barnhart was found lying on the edge of the turning lane. Myers was not at the scene when police arrived. Many police used surveillance camera video to get a description of the car, and an officer recognized it from recent prior contact. Record searches led them to Myers' home. Barnhart's body was sent for an autopsy. Many police continue to investigate. A person identifying himself as the victim's family member commented on MPD's social media post about the incident: "The Barnhart Family appreciates the efforts of both Law Enforcement Agencies and EMS. Your dedication to this last night was outstanding. I want to personally thank Officer Stanley Cook for sitting with my grandmother until family arrived, that meant a lot to us." Justin Barnhart
