Commissioners voted unanimously Monday to appoint chief deputy George Griffith as sheriff, following the death of longtime sheriff Tom Maddox. Griffith will be sworn in at 10 a.m. Friday in the district courtroom. He has served as chief deputy ten years and has been employed with the department 21 years. A large crowd attended the meeting to support his appointment. County Judge Daryl Melton said Maddox’s death left a “huge hole in people’s hearts.” He said county officials received overwhelming feedback in support of Griffith. Melton said he knows Griffith will do a great job as sheriff. Commissioners Court approved the appointment until the next election.
