Newton County Sheriff Colton Havard has released the name of the man who was shot and killed on Friday in an alleged altercation with a deputy following a traffic stop as 49-year-old Michael Boyd Powers of Bon Wier.
Officers there say that earlier in the day, they went to a home in the Buckhorn Community on Farm to Market 2626 in response to a report of a disturbance or family violence where they found Powers who they knew was wanted on a warrant accusing him of aggravated assault in Kansas.
However, before officers could take Powers into custody, he reportedly ran from the home into a wooded area to evade arrest.
Havard said officers later learned that Powers, who was reported to be armed, was hiding in a tool box on the bed of a pickup truck, which was spotted shortly after 5:00 pm on Highway 190, east of Newton.
Havard said that after the deputy stopped the vehicle, Powers jumped out of the box and aimed a pistol at the officer, who immediately pulled a weapon and fired, killing Powers.
