HOUSTON, Texas (KLTV) - Rice University Police Department is investigating what they believe was a murder-homicide in student housing. Houston Police Department is assisting them in the investigation. On Monday night, they announced that all classes that would normally be held on Tuesday will be canceled this week as the investigation continues. According to CNN, the shooting involved two people; one was a female student who was found shot to death in her room in the Jones College student dorm. A male was also found dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Rice Spokesperson Chris Stipes told CNN. They do not believe he was a student. The initial report from the university stated that there was an incident at Jones College, which is a student dormitory. They advised all students to stay inside their rooms until further notice at 5:41 p.m., using the campus text alert systems and social media. The university then canceled all classes and activities that were set to take place for the rest of the day and evening. At 7:19 p.m., the shelter-in-place order was lifted, but classes and activities were still canceled for the rest of Monday. According to the Rice Thresher, the university’s student newspaper, a Houston Fire Department ambulance and a crime scene unit van from Houston Forensic Science Center were parked outside Jones and Brown colleges.
