Prisoner killed by cellmate in the Gib Lewis Prison Unit

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice has confirmed that a prisoner in the Gib Lewis Prison Unit near Woodville was killed on Saturday afternoon by his cellmate. TDCJ Spokesman Robert Hurst has identified the deceased as 61-year-old Jimmy Lynn White, a resident of Clarksville in Red River County. Hurst said White was taken to the prison’s medical facility where he died. White’s brother-in-law, Jeremy Drobil, said he and his wife, Amy, who is White’s sister, received a call Sunday night from TDCJ officials informing them of the death. White was serving a short sentence on a drug conviction in Red River County, and he was scheduled to be released soon. In fact, Drobil said he and his wife had been making preparations for the return of her brother. Unfortunately, now they’ll be making funeral plans. Hurst said so far no criminal charges have been filed against the cellmate, and his identity has not been released. This is the second instance of a prisoner being beaten to death by a cellmate in the Gib Lewis Unit this year. In January, Danny Luken sustained fatal injuries, and his cellmate, Jason Mark Ryder, was charged with his death. In August of 2022, 42-year-old Justin Levi Galloway was found deceased in his Gib Lewis Unit prison cell with a noose around his neck and also a puncture wound to his neck. The death was announced by prison officials as a suicide. In June of 2022, a guard at the Gib Lewis Unit died from a self-inflicted gunshot. The name of the deceased was never made public. A Gib Lewis Unit prisoner and two TDCJ employees were critically injured in March of this year in Polk County. A TDCJ van was being driven by Jatavion Rigsby, 26, of San Augustine, and his colleague in the passenger seat was Zachary Young, 30, of Jasper. They were carrying one prisoner, Louis Matthews, 61, who was wheelchair-bound. All three were injured when the driver lost control and the van rolled over.
