LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - A Lake Charles man shot his wife before turning the gun on himself in an attempt to take his own life, according to Lake Charles police.
On Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025, at 3:23 a.m., Lake Charles Police responded to an Emergency Assist call in the 3800 block of Texas Street.
When officers entered the residence, they found Laura Fontenot, 47, who had been shot and killed, and Brett Fontenot, who had been shot but was alive, according to a news release from Deputy Chief Kevin Kirkum.
Investigators with the Lake Charles Police Department learned the couple got into an argument earlier in the night at another location, Kirkum said. Once back at their residence, Brett Fontenot shot Laura before turning the weapon on himself.
Since the night of the incident, Brett Fontenot has been in a Baton Rouge hospital recovering from his injuries.
On Monday, Nov. 17, Lake Charles Police went to Baton Rouge and arrested him for second-degree murder. He has been booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and his bond has been set at $1.5 million.
