Pitkin woman pleads guilty to killing her husband

VERNON PARISH, La. (KPLC) - A Pitkin woman who authorities say called the police after shooting and killing her husband has pleaded guilty to a count of manslaughter.

Melissa Ann Sweat was arrested on Aug. 20, 2024, after calling 911 to report that she shot and killed her husband, Rodney Sweat, prosecutors said. Rodney was found dead from an apparent gunshot at their home on Boundary Road in Pitkin.

Originally facing a count of second-degree murder, she appeared in court today before Judge Tony Bennett and pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter.

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 28, 2026.

Sweat faces up to 40 years in prison for the count of manslaughter.
