PINEVILLE, La. (KALB) - The Pineville Police Department is warning the public to be aware of skimming devices, as one was recently located at a local business at a self-checkout register. Police did not reveal which business had the device. The ATM skimmer device usually fits over the original card reader. Some ATM skimmers are inserted in the card reader, placed in the terminal or situated along exposed cables. Pinhole cameras installed on ATMs record a customer entering their PIN. The placement of the pinhole camera can vary. In some cases, keypad overlays are used instead of pinhole cameras to record PINs. These overlays record a customer’s keystrokes. The skimming devices store data to be downloaded or wirelessly transferred later. If you notice a skimming device, or are unsure, call PPD at 318-442-6603 EXT. 1.
