A pilot was killed in a Friday afternoon helicopter crash northeast of Newton. It happened at about 1:30 off of Farm to Market Road 1414. Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby was at the scene and he said that it was a civil aviation helicopter. Burby said the pilot was the only person aboard. The Texas Department of Public Safety released a statement saying that a person on the ground standing next to a truck was injured when he was struck by one of the helicopter's landing skids. He was taken by ambulance to Jasper Memorial Hospital. Additionally, DPS says that the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will be conducting the investigation into the crash. The name of the pilot hasn't been released pending notification of next-of-kin. However, we have learned that the aircraft was registered to Callaway Land Management in Lumberton. KJAS News will update this story when more information becomes available.
