PALESTINE, Texas (KLTV) - An inmate was found deceased in his cell in Anderson County early Thursday morning.
According to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, on Thursday at 3:08 a.m. a detention officer and a staff nurse were performing their assigned duties in a hallway near a single occupancy cell.
The nurse alerted the detention officer to a problem with a male inmate in the cell. The detention officer and nurse entered the cell and found a 32-year-old male with a ligature around his neck, according to the sheriff’s office. The pair immediately removed the ligature from the inmate and requested EMS.
Personnel from the Palestine Regional Medical Center EMS arrived and assessed the inmate. They detected no viable signs of life and informed the jail personnel he was deceased.
Texas Ranger Josh Jenkins was notified. Jenkins arrived and initiated a custodial death investigation, the sheriff’s office said.
The 32-year-old Palestine man was being held on a parole revocation warrant and pending criminal charges for aggravated robbery, possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of a Firearm by a felon.
Sheriff’s office personnel are conducting an administrative investigation of the incident, the statement said, and the Texas Rangers are conducting the custodial death investigation.
