The Texas Department of Public Safety has confirmed that a person is dead following an auto accident that occurred on Sunday morning in Newton County.
The volunteers of the Newton Fire Department along with at least three other departments and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the location on County Road 4002 shortly after 7:00, when it was reported that the two-vehicle accident had occurred near the Woods Community, just south of Newton.
DPS Sergeant Shana Clark said a preliminary crash investigation indicated that a Dodge pickup was traveling north, while Lexus SUV was traveling south. Clark said it was reported that the Dodge crossed over into the oncoming lane and struck the Lexus.
Clark said the driver of the Lexus, a 77-year-old man from Newton, was pronounced dead at the scene by a Newton County Justice of the Peace. The deceased was later identified as Timothy Knighton.
Clark said the driver of the Dodge, 40-year-old Teron Elizabeth Harrell of Newton, was not injured.
