A man is dead and officers with the Jasper County Sheriff's Department and the Texas Rangers Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety are investigating a shooting that occurred before 7:00 on Saturday evening at a home east of Kirbyville. Officers reportedly went to the home about a mile east of Kirbyville on Farm to Market Road 82 earlier in the day when family members reported that a man was threatening to commit suicide. However, later in the day emergency dispatchers reportedly received another call from the address reporting that the individual was armed with a shotgun and again threatening violence saying he planned to commit suicide by a police officer. Shortly after their arrival at the scene officers reported that a shooting had occurred and called for an ambulance. However, the name of the deceased or additional information has not been released. KJAS has learned that the shooting occurred as the first two officers, a patrol officer from the Kirbyville Police Department and a State Trooper arrived at the scene. Sheriff Mitchel Newman said Sunday that even though officers from his department were not present when the shooting took place. However, Newman said the original call came to the sheriff's department and that he and others are assisting with the investigation of the incident.
