Jasper County Sheriff Mitchell Newman confirmed late Friday afternoon that a deputy from his department, Lesley Jo Wade, died as a result of injuries she received in auto accident that occurred shortly after 9:00 on Friday morning near Zavalla in nearby Angelina County. A report issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety said 24 year old Wade, who lived in Zavalla, was headed south on Highway 69 near the intersection of Farm to Market Road 1818, in a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee, when an eighteen wheeled tractor trailer truck pulled onto Highway from FM-1818 in front of her. Officers said the Jeep driven by Wade hit the trailer of the truck resulting in severe injuries to Wade and what was said to be minor injuries to her two children who were riding with her. Wade and the two children, a 6 year old boy and a 6 year girl were transported by ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital in Lufkin where Lesley Wade was pronounced dead a short time after her arrival. The driver of the truck, Juan Juarez, 64 of Nacogdoches was not injured in the crash. The report said the accident in a time of very heavy fog and poor visibility. Officers said Wade was off duty at the time and was traveling in her own personal vehicle. Shortly before 4:00 on Friday afternoon emergency dispatchers at the Jasper County Sheriff's Department asked for a moment of silence for Deputy Wade.
