The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department has arrested a Newton man for stealing copper in Evadale.
According to the report, on Monday deputies responded to a report of the man taking copper from power poles on Highway 105. The report said they arrived to find the man’s vehicle with copper wiring inside it, but the suspect, 49-year-old James Knighton, ran into a wooded area and eluded capture.
The report said on Tuesday morning, Knighton was spotted walking along Highway 96 and he was arrested.
Knighton has been charged with Theft of Material-Copper.
