Newton County Sheriff says don't fall for scam

Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby warned local residents on Friday not to fall for the latest scam. According to Burby, someone has been calling numerous people in Newton County and telling them they must pay an outstanding fine or go to jail. Burby said the problem is that the calls are not coming from the sheriff's department or anyone in law enforcement but instead to scam artist trying to get money. Burby said first of all deputies within his department do not call people telling them of warrants or fines. He said they instead deliver them in person. Burby said anyone receiving a call from someone stating that they are with the sheriff's department should hang up and call the sheriff's department to be sure who they are talking to. Burby warned don't be scammed by con artists posing as officers.
