A Newton County Sheriff’s deputy was taken to the hospital after crashing into a fallen tree Saturday while responding to a disturbance in the Call community.
The crash happened Saturday morning, as the deputy was traveling south on State Highway 87 near County Road 3060. The deputy witnessed a tree fall into the roadway, took evasive action, and struck the tree, causing major damage to the patrol vehicle.
The deputy sustained minor injuries and was transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The Texas Department of Public Safety responded to the scene, conducted the crash investigation, and will lead the investigation moving forward. The Newton Police Department assisted with traffic control.
