Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

Daily News & More in Hemphill is reporting that a murder investigation is underway in Sabine County and a suspect has been arrested and charged. The report said it began shortly after 5:00 Saturday morning with what was initially believed to be a two-vehicle crash on Highway 83 East near Farm to Market Road 3121, about 3 miles east of Hemphill in an area known as Old Sabinetown.

Emergency responders soon learned that it was not an accident, but exactly what happened is not yet clear.

According to the report, Sabine County Sheriff Tom Maddox said a woman died from what appeared to be blunt force trauma, and possibly a gunshot wound. A Sabine County Justice of the Peace has ordered an autopsy and he and others seek additional information. Meanwhile, Maddox said the male suspect claimed that he had been stabbed, but once at a hospital emergency room it was determined that he had not been stabbed. He was treated for minor injuries and released to the custody of deputies.

He has been identified as Matthew Hoy Edgar, 24, of Hemphill, who reportedly charged with murder. At last word Edgar remained in the Sabine County Jail with bond not yet set.

The name of the dead female has not yet been released.

Sabine County deputies and the Texas Rangers are investigating the case.
