MINDEN, La. – One of two children left locked inside car seats in a house with no adult supervision has died, Police Chief Jared McIver said Thursday.
So far, no charges have been filed as detectives await the results of an autopsy and other information gathered in their investigation.
Minden police got a call around mid-morning about a 2-year-old child being found unresponsive in a house on Young Street. She was taken to Minden Medical Center and could not be resuscitated.
McIver said its still early in the investigation, but what he’s learned so far is apparently there were no adults in the house at the time the child became unresponsive. Detectives are trying to determine who was at the house and when.
“A lot of fingers are being pointed,” McIver said.
A second child – 10 months old – also was locked in a car seat. That child was not injured.
McIver said the investigation will include an examination of the child seat the 2-year-old was in and whether it may not have been secured properly or could have malfunctioned. Early investigation suggests the car seat locking mechanism may have malfunctioned, causing the child to choke.
The child, who’s not yet been identified, was sent to Little Rock, Ark., for an autopsy. The results could take a couple of days.
