Mother of Matthew Hoy Edgar arrested, accused of hiding son

KJAS Radio News has learned that the mother of man who skipped bail last year while he was on trial for the murder of his ex-girlfriend in Sabine County has been arrested and charged with hiding her son from the law. Sabine County Sheriff Tom Maddox confirmed on Monday that Cindy Hogan Edgar, 51, of Hemphill turned herself in on Monday morning. Hogan appeared before Sabine County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Henry Alvarado, who officially arraigned her on the charge of Hindering Apprehension or Prosecution of a Known Felon. Bond on Edgar was set at $20,000 and she was later released after posting bond.  Sheriff Maddox said the charges and arrest of Edgar was a result of an investigation that had been carried out by the Texas Rangers Division of the State Police. Matthew Edgar escaped when he left a courtroom during his trial in January of 2022 and never returned. However, that did not keep a Sabine County Jury from finding him guilty of killing 19 year old Livye Lewis on Halloween of 2020 and sending him to prison for 99 years. Following his disappearance, Matthew Edgar was on the run for months, despite an all out search that was carried out by Sabine County Sheriff's Deputies and numerous other agencies. However, on Thursday December 31st of 2022, he was captured by the U.S. Marshall's Service on the back porch of a home not far from his mother's house just east of Hemphill. Following Matthew Edgar's capture, Sheriff Maddox said that other arrests might be immanent and that he had called on the Texas Rangers to assist in the investigation of where he had been hiding and who might of helped him. In January of this year, following a hearing at the Sabine County Courthouse run Hemphill, Matthew Edgar was sent to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice where he is still being held.
