Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby says his department is investigating after a man was shot twice at the former Exotic Cat Refuge, located on County Road 3075 east of Kirbyville and just inside Newton County. According to Burby, it happened at about 12:00 noon on Tuesday, and the man showed up at the Jasper Memorial Hospital emergency room shortly thereafter. Hospital staff then notified his department of the situation. Sheriff Burby said deputies have arrested the suspect and he remains in the Newton County Jail awaiting charges at arraignment. Burby said the gunshot wounds are non-life threatening. Meanwhile, the names of the victim or suspect have not yet been released.
