Man killed by police after foot chase during traffic stop in Shreveport; LSP investigating

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) — A traffic stop by Shreveport police turned deadly Sunday morning in the city’s Sunset Acres neighborhood. Dead as a result of the officer-involved shooting is a male who fled in the 2700 block of Marquette Avenue, authorities report. He was an occupant of the vehicle that was stopped. “The subject proceeded to flee on foot and a foot pursuit was ensued,” said Trooper Ryan Davis, of Louisiana State Police (LSP). “At the termination of the foot pursuit, the subject presented a handgun and shots were fired.” The wounded male was taken to a local trauma center, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released. No officer was wounded by the gunfire. LSP, the investigating agency, has not said whether the male fired the handgun. Nor has information been released about the number of shots the SPD officer fired and how many times the victim was shot. Caddo 911 dispatch records indicate the shooting occurred around 8:45 a.m. Sunday (Nov. 5) during a traffic stop by Shreveport police on Marquette Street between Canal Boulevard and Bowie Street. More than 25 SPD units responded to the scene. “We don’t know what happened, we won’t know what happened until we see the body cam. We won’t know, we won’t know the extent until we see the body cam,” said Breka Peoples, an activist who went to the scene after receiving calls from people about the shooting. “I mean my people just want justice. They want justice and they want some kind of accountability,” Peoples said. “And we don’t need to wait two or three weeks to release the body camera, we need a week. We need to be releasing within a week because everybody going to be on the edge.” LSP reported that it is working diligently to collect additional information about the fatal shooting. “We ask those in the area to realize this is an active investigation, an active scene and that they would take different routes to allow our investigators to complete their investigation,” Davis said. It was 10:21 a.m. Sunday when LSP announced that it had been requested by Shreveport Police Department to investigate the deadly officer-involved shooting.
