Man in Kirbyville set himself on fire while committing arson

Police in Kirbyville say a man set a shed on fire and in the middle of the ordeal ended up setting himself on fire at a home there on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred at about 4:oo at 416 West Lester Hawthorne Street, just west of US Highway 96. Kirbyville Police Sergeant Josh Hancock says the unidentified man, approximately 3o years of age, lived with his mother at that address and she has been been trying to get him to move out of the house. Hancock said the man set apparently set a storage shed on fire, and in the process, set his legs on fire and then fled on foot from the scene. He was found a short distance away where he was loaded into an ambulance and transported to a hospital. Meanwhile, Hancock said the fire spread to the porch of the mother's house, but firefighters were able to douse the flames and save the house. However, the shed was complete loss. Firemen from Trout Creek also assisted in battling the blaze. Hancock said more details will be released as they continue to gather information.
