Jasper Police Chief Garrett Foster says a man is facing a third degree felony charge of Evading Arrest or Detention with a Motor Vehicle after he refused to stop for an officer. It happened during the noon hour on Monday. Foster said the 49-year-old Jasper man was driving a 2019 Dodge pickup truck when the officer tried to make a traffic stop in the 200 block of West Gibson Street. However, Chief Foster said the man refused to stop and continued driving over 2 miles until he finally stopped on Dorgan Drive in southeast Jasper, and he was then taken into custody. Foster said the man had previous convictions for Evading Arrest, which is why the latest charge was bumped up to a third degree felony. Chief Foster also said the man had been drinking and he had an open container of alcohol in the vehicle. The name of the man has not yet been released pending formal charges at arraignment, which is expected to occur on Tuesday morning.
