A 20-year-old man has died after a tragic accident near Vidor, where he attempted to rescue two individuals from a side-by-side vehicle that slipped into a canal.
The incident occurred on May 4 at approximately 12:17 a.m. near South Terry Road and Concord Street.
Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of an accident involving ATVs near the canal. Upon arrival, they assisted emergency medical services in transporting the unresponsive victim to a hospital.
Investigations revealed that a 21-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman were traveling westbound on the canal in a side-by-side vehicle. The driver attempted to navigate around a hole, causing the vehicle to slip into the canal on its right side.
The victim, Hunter Koricanek, in a courageous effort, jumped into the water to prevent the vehicle from fully submerging. As he held onto the side-by-side, the driver attempted to back up, causing the vehicle to fall into the canal and pin the victim underwater for several minutes.
Despite efforts to save him, Koricanek, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
