Lumberton Police Chief Danny Sullins says a man accused of sexually assaulting an infant 15 years ago has been indicted by the Hardin County Grand Jury and arrested. Jeremy Ryan Smith, 50, is currently a resident of Angleton and he was arrested in Brazoria County following his indictment. He is now in the Hardin County Jail under a charge of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child with bond set at $1 million. According to Sullins, the investigation began in 2009 when it was reported that a 6-week-old baby had been sexually assaulted. Sullins said Detective Joey Breaux worked very hard on the case, but he just wasn’t able to develop enough probable cause to make an arrest. Sadly, Breaux died in 2021 as a result of cancer and was never able to see an arrest made in the case that he worked so hard on. Sullins said Sergeant Chad Wilson then took up the investigation and new evidence surfaced which led to the case being taken before the grand jury and an indictment. When Smith was transported back to Hardin County, Sullins said officers placed him in Joey Breaux’s handcuffs. If convicted, Smith could face up to life in prison.
