One person was injured when an SUV crashed into trees early Tuesday afternoon a few miles north of Jasper. It happened at about 1:30 on Highway 96 North near County Road 249. DPS Sergeant Shana Clark said 72-year-old Clyde Edwards, of San Augustine, was driving a 1998 GMC SUV northbound on Highway 96. Clark said he leaned down to grab a drink and drifted slightly out of the travel lane. When this occurred, she said the passenger, 36-year-old Michael Renfro grabbed the steering wheel, causing the vehicle to start sliding sideways and off of the highway where it struck multiple trees. Renfro had several cuts to both of his legs and a minor abrasion on his head. He was transported by Allegiance EMS to CHI St Luke’s Hospital in Lufkin. Edwards was not injured.
