An accident involving a police officer on a motorcycle and a pickup truck occurred early Friday afternoon in far south Newton County and the officer is in very critical condition. According to Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Shana Clark, emergency crews responded to the crash shortly after 1:00 on Highway 62 near County Road 3147. Sergeant Clark said two officers on motorcycles with their emergency lights activated were escorting a wide load southbound. She said they were in the northbound lane and were signaling oncoming traffic to move over to the shoulder of the highway. However, she said the driver of a Toyota pickup truck did not follow their instructions and the truck hit one of the motorcycles head-on. Clark said the officer sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to St Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont. The names of the officer or the other driver were not immediately available.
