LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - A Lufkin man is behind bars after being accused of trying to open a vehicle where two children were alone, waiting while their parents shopped. At about 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, officers responded to a possible vehicle burglary at a sporting store in the 2900 block of Brentwood Drive, according to a release from the Lufkin Police Department. The report said a man was seen trying to open the doors of a locked truck with children inside. The children had been left in the vehicle while their parents went into the store to shop, police said, and when the man approached they used the cell phone they had been left with to text their mother. She said she believed the suspect had been watching her and approached just after she entered the store. The parents attempted to confront the suspect, who walked away, the release says. Officers said they arrived to find the man outside another nearby store, and he initially resisted arrest but was then taken into custody. The suspect was identified as Peter Makori Nyakeriga, 22. Police said he claimed he was looking for work, but his reason for approaching the vehicle was unclear. Nyakeriga has been charged with public intoxication and attempted burglary of a motor vehicle. He was booked into the Angelina County Jail with bond set at $500.
