BATON ROUGE, La. - Wednesday marks the final day for Louisiana residents to register to vote in person or by mail for the upcoming May 16 primary election. This deadline is particularly significant this year due to the implementation of a closed primary system for several key offices.
Under the closed primary rules, voters will receive a ballot featuring only the candidates from their declared political party. For those currently registered with a specific party, this is the last opportunity to change that affiliation before being "locked in" for the primary. Voters registered as "No Party" will be required to choose which party's ballot they wish to cast upon arriving at their polling precinct on election day, or they may opt for a "No Party" ballot containing only local races.
The primary includes high-profile contests such as the U.S. Senate race and several U.S. House seats, including District 4.
While the in-person deadline is Wednesday, residents still have until April 25 to register through the GeauxVote online system. Early voting for the primary will be held from May 2 through May 9, excluding Sunday, with the election taking place on Saturday, May 16.
