JASPER COUNTY, Texas (KPLC) - Authorities in Texas are investigating a crash that claimed the life of a Louisiana man.
Dustin Spears, 44, of Many, was killed in the crash, according to Sgt. Shana Clark of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The crash happened around 4:45 this morning on Highway 62 near County Road 784, which is south of Buna, DPS said.
Spears was driving a Ram pickup truck south when a Chevrolet pickup truck behind him tried to pass him in a no-passing zone, DPS said. The Chevy jerked right to avoid a Nissan traveling in the opposite lane and hit Spears.
Spears drove into a ditch, hit some trees, and died at the scene, DPS said. The Nissan drove off the road and hit a tree while trying to avoid a head-on crash with the Chevy. The driver of the Nissan was not hurt.
DPS identified the driver of the Chevy as Liborio Reyes, 38, of Jasper. He and an adult passenger were not hurt.
DPS said no further information is available at this time.
