LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) - Longview police were called to a domestic violence incident on Friday that turned into a standoff.
At about 8:50 p.m., officers were called to the 200 block Tupelo Drive and learned a felony family violence incident had taken place, according to a release from the Longview Police Department.
Officers said they tried to speak with the suspect, Benjamin Hampton Howell, 41, but he went into the home and allegedly pointed a rifle at them. The officers then took cover and called a SWAT unit, but they heard one shot from inside the home, the release says.
SWAT and the Negotiations Unit responded but were unable to speak with Howell, so they began securing the area and taking “additional non-lethal force measures” to resolve the standoff, the release says.
Howell was arrested on charges of continuous violence against the family and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has been booked into the Gregg County Jail with bond set at $200,000.
