Newton Fire Department Captain Melanie Smith says a lightning strike sparked a fire that destroyed a 2-story home in Newton County late Saturday night. It happened shortly before midnight as thunderstorms were moving across the area. Smith said Newton, Bon Wier, and Trout Creek firefighters battled the blaze, which occurred on County Road 4002, about 2 miles southeast of Newton. According to Captain Smith, after lightning hit the house, the fire started in the attic and then began spreading downward. Smith said the home was owned by John Ebarb and his family. They were not injured, but unfortunately the home was not insured. Captain Smith said the family lost everything and their immediate need is for money, food, and personal hygiene products.
