Jasper Police Chief Garrett Foster announced shortly after noon on Wednesday that a suspect had been arrested in connection with one of the recent armed robberies that occurred at convenience stores here in Jasper. Chief Foster held short of releasing the name of the suspect, pending formal charges and arraignment, but did say that the 19-year-old resident of Jasper had been taken into custody in connection with the incident alleged to have occurred at the Sunshine Texaco Convenience Store in the 1113 block of North Wheeler Street on Thanksgiving evening. In addition, Foster also stated that during questioning, the suspect had confessed to the crime. Shortly after the incident occurred, Foster had praised the work of the officers that investigated the incident, especially Sgt. Clint Fowler and his handling of the department’s trained dog, “Mak”, which he said located clothing and other items belonging to the suspect, not far away from the store. Foster further stated that it was the combined effort of the department’s patrol and narcotic’s officers that resulted in identifying the suspect which ultimately resulted in the arrest. Foster said that even though no arrest had been made in the first robbery that occurred on Thursday November 21st at the Sunshine Convenience Store on West Gibson Street at the intersection of Graham Street that the investigation was continuing. In both instances, a suspect who was only described as a black male was reported to have entered the store with a gun and demanded cash. In both cases, the suspect was last seen running away with an undisclosed amount of money in hand. Police said early on that they did not believe the two robberies were committed by the same suspect and they are still asking for anyone having any information about the first incident to come forth.
