A man that outran local law enforcement officers and escaped chase in early September in nearby Newton County has been captured here in Jasper.
Newton County Sheriff Officer Colton Havard said officers from this department, along with several other agencies, converged on an apartment early Monday morning and arrested James William Woods, Jr. who had been wanted since the chase that involved a car, a four-wheeler and running on foot.
It all began with a possible traffic violation, but tensions escalated when it turned into a high speed police chase. However, the attention of those pursuing Woods increased when it was learned that he had already served time for assaulting a police officer and was wanted by the state prison system for parole violation.
After taking many roads and paths in an around Newton and the surrounding forest, Woods was never seen again until his arrest on Monday, when he was captured and transported to the Jasper County Jail.
Those involved in the investigation into Wood’s whereabouts and his arrest included the U.S. Marshals Service, the Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigations Division, the Jasper Police Department, and the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.
Officers who arrested Woods said he fought them to the end as he was handcuffed, loaded into a car and taken to jail.
