The Jasper Independent School District Board of Trustees has voted to use district funds to purchase school supplies for students this year.
Superintendent John Seybold said the board members took into consideration that unemployment numbers have risen in this area due to Coronavirus, so there was a concern that parents wouldn't have the funds to purchase supplies this year.
According to Seybold, the district has a surplus of funds left over from last year's budget due to students not being in class for the last three months of the school year. Seybold said "With no athletic competition and travel associated with that, or other activities, we had leftover funds so they'll be used to purchase the supplies."
Seybold noted that the district is just buying the basics. "There won't be any elaborate spending, no 5-star notebooks, nothing like that. Also no backpacks, just the basic school supplies", said Seybold.
According to Seybold, the district will announce a date and location for students to begin picking up the supplies once they are purchased and ready to go.
