The Jasper Fire Department was called upon Tuesday morning to assist with an 18-wheeler crash involving a hazardous material situation in far northeast Newton County. It happened shortly after 8:00 on Farm to Market Road 692 near the Toledo Bend Dam.
Firefighters arrived to find the big-rig off of the highway and on its side.
The tanker truck was carrying potassium hydroxide which is highly corrosive and can cause severe chemical burns to anyone who comes into contact with it. Fortunately, firefighters said that none of the product leaked from the trailer.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Shana Clark, 64-year-old Anthony Berrott, of Spring, was driving the truck northbound. Clark said Berrott “…entered a left-handed curve at a speed which was unsafe and overturned.”
Sergeant Clark said Berrott was transported by ambulance to St Lukes Hospital in Lufkin with non-life threatening injuries.
Jasper firefighters remained at the scene until the product could be pumped out of the wrecked trailer and pumped into another trailer.
