BATON ROUGE, La. (KPLC) - The Iowa Yellow Jackets were honored at the Louisiana State Capitol on Monday after winning the program’s first football state championship this past season with a perfect 14-0 record.
The team was recognized by both the House and the Senate, marking another milestone in a historic year for the Yellow Jackets.
Iowa head coach Tommy Johns said the visit was a memorable experience for everyone involved.
“First off, very appreciative of Senator Abraham and Representative Broussard for having us today,” Johns said. “Just an unbelievable experience for all of our players and coaches and staff. Like I said, just to come to a historic place like this and to be honored is something we’ll never forget.”
Seniors Javion Adams and Kohl Fulton played key roles in Iowa’s championship run and said the recognition was a meaningful way to close out their careers.
“It’s something I’ve never seen before,” Adams said. “It answers some questions of what’s inside and what everything looks like. It’s just like, wow, I ain’t never seen nothing like this before.”
Fulton said the ceremony felt like the culmination of years of hard work.
“It means everything,” Fulton said. “I feel like it’s kind of finishing off the fruits of our labors that we spent four long years to get to where we were. It feels like, I don’t know, I’m kind of saying goodbye to the team, and it feels good.”
The Capitol recognition served as a fitting tribute for a team that captured its first state title — the first by a Calcasieu Parish program since W.O. Boston won it in 1972.
