The Jasper County Sheriff's Office and Buna ISD are investigating AI-altered images taken by students and circulated through social media, and while they're not commenting on the specifics, some parents say the edited images of girls make them appear to be nude.
Buna ISD says it's aware of recent allegations regarding the inappropriate use of cameras and artificial intelligence by students.
"The District takes these concerns seriously and has initiated an investigation in accordance with District policy and applicable law," said Buna ISD in a statement. "We are cooperating fully with law enforcement as they conduct their own investigation. At this time, there is no indication of any ongoing threat to student safety, and all students and staff remain safe.. Because this is an active investigation, the District is limited in what it can share at this time. We will take appropriate action based on the findings and will continue to prioritize the safety, privacy, and well-being of all students. We appreciate the community’s patience and support as this process moves forward."
Sheriff Chuck Havard also released a statement late Thursday.
"On April 16, 2026, at approximately 10:15 a.m., the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Buna ISD and concerned parents regarding images circulating through social media, which were illicit in nature," said Havard. "These allegations are serious and could result in criminal charges. We are conducting a thorough investigation into this matter and no further information can be released at this time."
Some parents say a group of male students is taking unsolicited pictures of girls as young as 14, using AI to edit the images to make them appear nude, and then circulating them.
