Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby said Monday that the investigation was continuing into an early Sunday morning murder. Sheriff Burby and others have not released the name of the victim or any other details. However, our news partner, KFDM reported late Monday that the family had identified the victim as 16-year-old Jerome "J.J." Rambo, who was a freshman at Burkeville High School. According to Burby, the shooting happened shortly before 4:00 at the Elam Event Center on Highway 190, just west of Newton, near the site of the former Sawmill Town. Rambo was rushed by ambulance to Jasper Memorial Hospital, where he died a short time later. Burby said on Monday that he and his investigators were back at the scene of the shooting and still collecting evidence. The sheriff is asking for anyone who witnessed the shooting or has any information about it to contact his office at 409-379-3636. You do not have to give your name if you do not want to.
