Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

On June 8, at 10:34 a.m., TDCJ staff at the Gib Lewis Unit in Woodville responded to inmate James Arlie Hampton, 54, experiencing a medical emergency in the dayroom.

Deputy Communications Director Hannah Haney at the Woodville prison said lifesaving measures were initiated. EMS arrived and assisted with additional life-saving measures.

EMS transported Hampton to a local hospital. At 12:55 p.m. he was pronounced deceased.

The Office of the Inspector General was notified.

The cause of death is unknown at this time, but believed to be from natural causes.

Hampton was serving a life sentence out of Henderson County for murder.

According to court records, Hampton was convicted in the January 2010 shooting death of Corey James David.

Investigators found David's burned body in a trash burn pit on property where Hampton lived near Athens.

Four inmates have died so far this year at the Woodville unit.
