Even though efforts have been underway for the last few days to prepare the streets and highways for freezing conditions and ice, wrecks were already beginning to occur here in the Jasper Area on Monday afternoon.
Emergency crews were dispatched to Campbell Hill on Highway 63, west of Jasper, shortly before 3:00, when it was reported that a late model Ford pick up truck had apparently hit a patch of ice, left the roadway and turned over. No injuries resulted from the incident.
A short time later, police and emergency crews were dispatched to Highway 96, just north of Jasper and Jasper Outboard when it was reported that a small pick up truck had hit ice and careened off the road and turned over at the edge of the woods. The driver appeared to be shook, but not injured.
Shortly before 4:00, the volunteers of the Beech Grove Fire Department were dispatched to the Neches River Bridge on Highway 190 at Dam B when it was reported that a multiple vehicle accident had occurred there. Shortly after his arrival at the scene, Beech Grove Fire Chief Jamie Gunter reported that the bridge was iced over.
No injuries were reported but traffic was backed up both directions.
Shortly before 5:00 pm on Monday the volunteers of the Lake Rayburn Fire Department were dispatched to a location on Farm to Market Road 1007, near Wingate Boulevard when it was reported that a vehicle had went off the road and turned over. However, no injuries resulted from the incident.
Jasper City Manager Greg Kelley said late Monday that city crews were out spreading ice melt pellets and pea gravel on streets and thoroughfares.
