Home badly damaged in a late Monday morning blaze, firefighter injured

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

The attic and second story of a home in northwest Jasper County was badly damaged by a fire late Monday morning, and a firefighter was injured. It happened shortly before noon at the Rick Travis residence, located at 1720 Farm to Market Road 254 South, which is just west of the Curtis Community. Travis said he had a fire in the fireplace and was watching the Inauguration of President Trump when his neighbor started beating on his door to tell him that the chimney and roof was on fire. Before firefighters arrived, the blaze got into the attic area of the home soon reaching two dormer windows. The Beech Grove, Jasper, Angelina River, and East End Fire Departments all worked together to douse the flames. Beech Grove Firefighter Chelsie Roy suffered an injury and she was transported by ambulance to Jasper Memorial Hospital where she was treated and released.
