MARSHALL, Texas (KSLA) — An electrical issue sparked the unintentional fire that severely damaged First Methodist Church in Marshall, authorities say.
Marshall Fire Department investigators have determined that the blaze that razed the sanctuary Dec. 9 began in the lower level of the historic church where administrative offices are located.
“The church leadership has been notified of the findings, and they are working with their insurance representatives to determine next steps,” Fire Chief David Rainwater said. “The building remains secured with temporary fencing while structural assessments are completed.”
The fire was first reported at 1:15 a.m. After about 15 hours of intensive firefighting by multiple fire departments, the blaze was brought under control at 4 p.m. Crews remained on the scene for several days to ensure the fire was completely out.
