Firefighters managed to control a Wednesday afternoon wildfire as it was threatening houses. The blaze was reported shortly after 2:00 in the 3600 block of County Road 298, commonly known as Garland Smith Road, about 3 miles southwest of the Jasper Bell Field Airport. The Beech Grove and Tri-Community Fire Departments responded and soon called for assistance from the Texas A&M Forest Service. The fire was declared under control about 45 minutes later. There's no word on what may have caused the blaze.
