Firefighters continued work on the Mayflower Community fire on Wednesday

Archived as originally published. Information reflects the date of this article.

Firefighters were busy Tuesday night and again Wednesday morning in north Newton County as they handled a wildfire. Burkeville Fire Chief Charles Duckworth says it was the same fire that burned about 160 acres of land on August 4th along Recreational Road 255 near the Mayflower Community, and then rekindled on Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters from Burkeville, Newton, East End, Beech Grove, and Jasper worked alongside the Texas A&M Forest Service. Firefighters said the worst part of the blaze was along County Road 1051. Duckworth, by the way, was very sick and running a 102° fever, but yet he continued battling the blaze along with all of the other dedicated firefighters.
