A fire that spread from a burn barrel on Sunday afternoon in the Dixie Community threatened multiple homes before fighters were able to get a handle on it. Meanwhile, those same firefighters are urging people to cease outdoor burning due to extremely dry conditions.
The Beech Grove and Angelina River Fire Departments along with the Texas A&M Forest Service responded to the blaze on Private Road 6310 shortly before 2:00 p.m.
Firefighters battled both the fire and the heat as the temperature on Sunday afternoon was 99° with a 108° heat index.
Although there is currently no burn ban in Jasper County, Beech Grove Fire Chief Jamie Gunter is urging people to stop burning outdoors. On Sunday Gunter issued the following statement, "It’s incredibly dry in our area. Wildfires that develop should be expected to rapidly intensify and behave erratically. Please refrain from outdoor burning and have a defensible space around the perimeter of your home."
