Female prisoner back in custody after jumping from moving patrol car in Jasper County

Law enforcement officers have taken a female prisoner back into custody after she jumped from a moving patrol car transporting her from Newton County to a hospital in Jasper for a routine medical exam. Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby told our media partner, KJAS, the woman jumped from a moving Newton County patrol unit shortly after 10 a.m. Friday on Highway 190 East near the Goodman Prison Unit, just east of Jasper. She has been identified as 41-year-old Shana Lynn McCarver Pilant, with addresses in Beaumont and the Trout Creek community. Following her escape, Burby said the woman went to a nearby house, broke in, and stole clothing that she changed into and then went back outside to continue running. She was found next to the highway across from the prison and the sheriff said she fought multiple deputies as they placed her into custody. According to Burby, she fought two state troopers when she was originally arrested on February 21. In that case, she was charged with two counts of Assault of a Public Servant, Failure to Identify, and Possession of a Controlled Substance. She was also wanted out of Jasper County on charges of Evading Arrest with a Vehicle and Prohibited Substance in a Correctional Facility.
