Father and son to serve as sheriffs of Jasper and Newton County

In an ironic twist; It looks like a father and his son will serve as sheriff in two side by side counties in East Texas. Chuck Havard was elected Sheriff of Jasper County and his son Colton will serve in Newton County. The two won on Tuesday evening in the Republican Primaries in the neighboring counties and unless challenged by an independent will take office in January. Chuck Havard, who is retired from the Texas Department of Public Safety defeated Scotty Duncan who has served as Chief Deputy for Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman who did not seek re-election. Havard received 4,470 votes over Duncan who received 3,683. Colton Havard, who has served as a Deputy Constable in Orange County, defeated incumbent Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby. Havard garnered 1,972 votes winning over Burby, who received 976 votes. However, still in the wind in the Jasper County race is Kirbyville Police Officer Josh Hancock, who reportedly signed a declaration of candidacy late last year and could possibly sign up to run as an independent in the November General Election.
